Based on social media, you can create an image that creates a general impression on your employer. The overview of the information that is found about you on the internet is worth just as much emphasis as the CV itself. According to a study conducted in the United States, nearly 70% of employers ‘ background information is looking for employees and candidates on social media accounts.

63% of employers use search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing). Such activities of companies constitute the objective of maintaining a good reputation for the company. Searching for background information reduces the risk of hiring a person who can somehow harm the company’s reputation or be inappropriate for this post and team.

Reviewing your social media account and making it more attractive to your employer does not mean that you should have false information about your studies or previous employers – a good general impression leaves a focus on the stitches.

The employer wants to see your other side through social media

A US study of 862 hiring managers shows that recruiters look beyond LinkedIn. Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook give additional information on the applicants and gives an overall picture of how that person really is in real life. There could some information which may be missing in the CV.

29% of hiring managers will look at an applicant’s LinkedIn profile, while 38% will look at social media accounts such as Facebook and Instagram. In this way, they get a view of the profile of the applicants that goes beyond purely the CV.

Cultural fit?

Posts and comments on social media give hiring managers a view on the beliefs of the applicants. Hiring managers can check whether an applicant’s opinion is consistent with the company culture. Companies don’t want to recruit rough or aggressive people. They want employees who communicate in a civilized and constructive way.

In a job interview this is not always possible to find out, people always show themselves from the best side. Social media can then give an idea whether the personality they display in a job interview is consistent with who he or she really is.

Hobbies and interests

Instagram, Facebook and Twitter give the recruiters a chance to know about the hobbies and interests and about what kind of articles you share, on how you communicate with others.

Fit with the sector

When you apply for a job with a marketing aspect, recruiters will look at the social media profiles even more with a magnifying glass. The potentially new employer will screen how applicants market themselves through social media. Do they have basic knowledge of how social media works? For example, Instagram is the place to show that you have an eye to bring a line and coherence to your posts. Can you take photos and videos that provoke engagement and jump out of your writings?

Although there are also recruiters who deliberately don’t look at your Facebook or Instagram profile and limit themselves to LinkedIn. Using personal information can also misrepresent to judge a person’s professionalism.
